The Romance of Art and Nature: The Poetry of Plants in Paintings & Prose
- $ 100.00 $ 100.00
October 26 - November 16
Fridays 10am – 1pm
Members: $85 (Login)
The class instructors will be Professor Sue Walker and Ms. Gail Gehiken (Poetry and Prose) and Derek Norman (Botanical Art, Drawing and Painting).
This four week class is suited to both poets and artists who find inspiration in either painting or writing a piece of prose (or both) based on the plants and flowers found in the Mobile Botanical Gardens Plant Collection.
Each student, each week will have the opportunity to create their individual works based on an agreed plant or flower with their opposite number. So that for every botanical drawing or painting (watercolor, gouache, colored pencil or pen & ink) there will exist an interpretation of prose or poetry. While the drawing or painting might be a realistic interpretation of a specific plant or flower (though it does not necessarily need to be) the written piece of prose might likewise be expressed and executed in any number of different techniques and writing styles. The possibilities seem endless and enormously inspiring.
The paintings and prose created during this class (subject to each student’s individual agreement) will be exhibited side-by-side at the Gardens’s “Pursuit of Flora” Exhibition at the Mobile Arts Council Gallery in December 2018.
