It is that time of the year when, sadly, trees take an enormous hit from on-coming storms, hurricanes and such that it seems an appropriate time to lavish appreciation for their beauty, their strength and vigor. So this is a class of thanks, appreciation and praise. We will be following the Mobile Botanical Garden’s new “Impressionistic/Expressionistic” track of working in the mediums of oil paint and gauache. This particular approach takes us away from the very detailed nature of botanical art into a “looser” fine arts genre of landscape art. We will be following in the footsteps and traditions of the likes of Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh and numerous other impressionistic painters. Therefore, “In Praise of Trees” welcomes the beginner, the intermediate and the advanced student who have the desire to learn to interpret the landscape in their own unique way.
The class will be held in the Magnolia Hill Studio as weather permits. We will review the fundamentals of drawing, gauache, and oil painting. Along with the basics of composition, color, scale and the various forms of perspective. The class is designed to give your work shape, form, depth and dimension. Additionally, a botany based overview What’s What and Where will offer each student a guide to the Garden’s Tree Collection. In all this, is a signature class for many students - for it could just change your life! Really? Really!!!
Instructor: Derek Norman,
Botanical Artist, Educator, Author, Curator & sometime Writer.
Please Note: This class will be held at the MBG Magnolia Hill (Interior/Exterior) Studio. A partially open-air facility ideal for the practice and presentation of an outdoor drawing/painting class.
